Ring My Bell

The thing about nostalgia is that it brings back memories. Not so nice memories. And very often, the kind we like to forget. Case in point: Ring my bell by Anita Ward. I thought I had completely forgotten that song but watching VH1 Classics the other day brought back all the miserable memories all over again.

And now I just can't get the song out of my head... it's stuck there like a broken record, and I find myself mouthing, 'ring mah bell, ring mah bell' along with that ghastly 'tyoon tyoon' sound so popular in the 70s.

On the plus side, however, I realised my distaste for the disco-sound even in those days was not completely misplaced. I can't imagine all THAT was considered 'cool' along with bell-bottoms, wing-sized collars and high heeled shoes.

Thank goodness, we are in the 21st Century now.

Hi, Ashish. I was never very fond of Anita Ward and that song was always a pet hate of mine. However, I remember that other Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, in a far more positive way. Remember "Love's Unkind"? That was a really great disco track.

Donna Summer, of course... but BoneyM, KC and the Sunshine Band, Lipps Inc., had already caused enough damage that it was hard for me to appreciate disco objectively.

What might be comforting is that even though the fashions of that era is back, the memories don't have to become real.

I HATED that song yet it's one you can't get out of your mind once you hear it. I still have images going through my mind of Pan's People dancing around to it on Top Of The Pops........waving hankies with bells sewn on and fluffy, bell-laden skirts!!

I liked some of Donna Summer's stuff. "I Feel Love", "Love's Unkind" were very good. I also liked Boney M and "Rivers Of Babylon" was (and still is) my favourite.

Hi Ashish,
I wasn't too much into Donna Summer - more like Abba. I still like them. I remember standing and showing off my "talent" to my father and his friends and was really proud when they clapped. They used to call me Latha Mangeshkar - haha. I'm sure she'd cringe if she knew.

But I do like the winged collars and bell bottoms and the high heels. What's wrong with them? LOL
